The perfect Autumnal decoration guide

As we are well and truly coming into jumpers, nights in and pumpkin-spiced latte season, it’s time to ensure your home is at its cosiest. It might not be something you have thought of before other than the odd candle here and there, but one thing a lot of inspirational interior design has in common is that they shift with the seasons. We are not suggesting you redecorate your whole home, but there are a few small changes you can make to transform your home into the perfect Autumn setting.

Before we get into the tips, there are a few rules of thumb that should be followed. The first thing you should do is to make sure that your home is clean and tidy. That way, you can easily identify the areas that need more attention.

Planning ahead and thinking about what your needs are going to be is also key to success, as it is in any interior design project, big or small. You should ask yourself questions such as “Do I want a lot of colour or just a few pops of colour?”, “Do I want the colours to be warm or cool?”, “Do I want it to be subdued or bold?”

It’s also important to remember that every room in your house might not need the same type of Autumnal decoration and that not every room needs to be the same. If the living room is where you spend most of your time, then focus on that. You can add elements throughout the home, but have a focus space which will be the centre of your vision.

Spruce up your soft furnishings
Adding more soft furnishings into the home such as cushions, throws and blankets are a great way to transition into Autumn. Not only for aesthetic purposes, but these make you and your guests feel more comfortable at home, which is ideal for those cosy nights in. These don’t necessarily have to be changed every season, but having summer and winter soft furnishings, that vary in weight, material and colour, that can be swapped out as and when is an inexpensive and manageable way to keep your home feeling fresh. This can be implemented in living rooms, bedrooms and anywhere that you want to relax!

Subtle autumnal tones
This is especially fun for those who love deep colours, think burgundy, burnt orange and emerald, and then pair these with more a subtle beige, white or black, and you’ll be able to create a beautiful space without being ‘over the top’ with the autumnal theme. First of all, choose the colours you’d like to go with and plan where you can incorporate them into the home.. Some of our favourite and easy ways to spruce up the colour theme in the home is through tea towels, bedding, bathroom accessories or vases. You probably don’t want to turn the whole house orange (or maybe you do), but scattering the complementing dark tones throughout the home is a great way to subtly bring the feel of Autumn into your interiors. If you’re unsure what colours pair well together, read our blog on it here.

Flora & fauna
Flower arrangements aren’t for everyone, but if you are someone who has a fresh bunch of flowers in the home every week, then this one is for you. Keep up-to-date with the seasons by changing your floral arrangements to match. Most florists, online and in-store will have specific autumnal bunches. We love going to a florist and choosing our floral arrangement, although we know this isn’t possible for everyone and a lot of online services offer great convenience. However, if you’re based in the West London area, some of our favourite local florists are Bloomside Florist, Chelsea Wild, Petals at Bibendum, make sure to pay them a visit if you are close by!

Take it to the next level with a centrepiece
This is one for those who are looking to take their Autumnal decorations to the next level. Centrepieces allow you to make a statement and can either be bought or hand-made if you’re feeling creative. There are no set rules for a centrepiece, and the best part of them is you can have a lot of fun and make them as bold or subtle as you like. Some accessories you could add to your centrepiece are foliage, mini pumpkins, acorns, candles, lights and flowers. They are ideal for dinner parties and special occasions! Here are some example of centrepieces for inspiration:

Sandlewood delight
Scents are probably the most common way that people switch up their interiors to follow the seasons, and it is one that can really make a difference. It’s common knowledge that our memories are made through scents, so by adding welcoming and warming scents in your home, you really are creating the perfect environment to make memories. Scents that are most associated with this time of year are cinnamon, bonfire and pumpkin but if you’re looking for something more subtle opt for sandalwood or bergamot.
